SEPF Interleague 2009 |

Once again the Scottish Eightball Pool Federation (SEPF) players converged upon Pettycur Bay Caravan Park in Burntisland, Fife. The teams, from Pool Leagues ranging from Fraserburgh in the north of Scotland to Glasgow in the South were all aspiring to be SEPF Interleague Champions for 2009. Friday 13th saw the arrival of the teams and a chilled out night with some flyers being played.
Group Stages The Team matches started on Saturday 14th at 9am. First on the tables were some of the pre-tournament favourites as Fraserburgh A faced East Neuk A, and Styx A faced East Neuk C. Other matches involved newcomers from Glasgow University v SEPF Ladies Team, Montrose A v Abertay B, Fraserburgh B v Styx B, Kirkcaldy v East Neuk B, Aberdeen B v Cowdenbeath, and Boddam & Cruden v Strathclyde University. All of these matches meant that the Aberdeen A, Robert Gordon University, Abertay A & Montrose B had byes in the first round of matches.
With all of the teams looking to get off to a good start two of the pre-tournament favourites got off to slow starts as Fraserburgh A lost 8-5 to East Neuk A and Styx A lost by the same score to Easy Neuk C, great results for both of the East Neuk teams. Montrose A showed no mercy to newcomers Abertay B as they thrashed them 8-0. Two of the first round of matches went to deciding frames as Kirkcaldy edged out East Neuk B and Cowdenbeath edged out Aberdeen B.
The second round of matches saw the teams who hadn’t played yet get their first taste of the action. Aberdeen A, another of the favourites, got off to a slow start as they lost 8-5 to Fraserburgh B. Robert Gordon University, another newcomer, got off to a slow start as they lost out 8-2 to East Neuk C. Aberdeen B made up for their first defeat by defeating Montrose B by the score of 8-0. Abertay A also lost their first match 8-2 to Cowdenbeath. With two rounds of matches now complete the competition became harder as teams now knew they had to win to remain in the tournament. The next round of matches were going to be make or break for some of the teams and it was time to step up to the plate. Tournament favourites Fraserburgh A, Styx A & Aberdeen A had mixed fortunes up to now with Fraserburgh A having lost 1 and won 1 they were in an elimination match with Glasgow University to see who progressed through to the Quarter Finals Knock Out Stage. Fraserburgh A won through by the score of 8-3. Styx A, also with a lost 1 won 1 came up against Robert Gordon University having to win also and they came through 8-2. Aberdeen A on the other hand had lost both of their opening two matches and needed the win more than anyone. They came up against a Montrose A team who looked to cause the first major upset of the tournament by eliminating the Aberdeen A Team. The team from Montrose rose to the occasion and won the match 8-5 sending Aberdeen A out of the tournament.
The fourth round of matches would decide which other teams would join Aberdeen A in being eliminated. With Fraserburgh A already through, the other favourites Styx A had to win to progress. They proceeded to do so by defeating East Neuk B 8-3. Styx B won their 3rd match but had to wait on the result between Montrose A & Fraserburgh B to see if they qualified. East Neuk A joined Fraserburgh A from Group 1 as the two teams to progress to the Knock Out Stage. Montrose A defeated Fraserburgh A 8-5 but this result meant that Styx B had missed out on going through by 1 frame and Fraserburgh B had joined Montrose A in going through. Styx A were in a good position knowing that the match between Kirkcaldy & East Neuk C had no bearing on them going through but would decide if they were winners or runners-up in their group. Kirkcaldy won the match 8-6 but were unfortunate to go out, after winning 3 matches, by 2 frames meaning that East Neuk C & Styx A Progressed. Joining them in the quarter finals from group 4 was proving to be tough as any 2 teams from 4 could still qualify. Boddam & Cruden lost out 8-4 to Montrose B which eliminated them, Aberdeen B won 8-4 against Abertay A to progress, which left Cowdenbeath against Strathclyde University with the winners progressing. The team from Cowdenbeath won the match 8-2 to go through with Aberdeen B.
Quarter Finals With matches now at the Knock-out stage there were no second chances for anyone. East Neuk A came up against Aberdeen B with both teams on a high after getting through. The team from Aberdeen held their nerve on a tough match and won through 11-8. The next match was between Montrose A & Styx A. Another tough match for both teams which saw Styx A progress through with the sore of 11-7. Next on were East Neuk C & Fraserburgh B. This was a tight match from start to finish and went to the deciding frame and East Neuk C winning through. The final quarter Final match saw Cowdenbeath against Fraserburgh A. Fraserburgh A found a bit of form in this match as they defeated the Cowdenbeath team 11-4 to be the last team into the Semi Finals.
Semi Finals The first Semi Final saw Aberdeen B v Styx A. This was another tough match for both teams and was very tight throughout. With the match poised at 8-8 Aberdeen B looked to be favourites on both tables but Styx A managed to turn around both frames to take a 10-8 lead. This seemed to shatter the Aberdeen team as Styx A won the 1 remaining frame required to reach the final. The second Semi Final saw East Neuk C against the Fraserburgh A team. East Neuk had just finished a deciding frame quarter final with the B team from Fraserburgh. This was another tight match as the frames went to both sides one for one. It looked from about 7-7 that this match was going all the way. This was to be so as the match finally went 10-10. Another decider for the players from East Neuk. One mistake from the Fraserburgh player saw the team from East Neuk take the frame and the match to win through to their first national final.
Final The Final saw both of the teams that progressed through from Group 3 of the initial draw. In the Group Stage the team From East Neuk defeated the team from Styx and were very confident in doing so again. But the team from Styx were also up for the fight to prove that they were still the favourites. This was going to be tough for the 2 team captains as both teams knew each other fairly well. Styx A got off to a flyer as they won the first 4 frames through Mike Keddie, Alan Higgins, Shaun Wishart & Rab Warrender. East Neuk struck back by taking the next 3 frames through Mike Paterson, John Chater & Bob Legg. The score at the end of the first set was 4-3 to Styx. The Second set saw East Neuk make a change to their order but the Styx team remained the same. Once again the Styx team won the first 4 frames through the same players as before. The East Neuk heads were starting to fall as the match was getting away from them. This time though Scott Kennedy, Ian Lally & Chris Corcoran took the next 3 frames for the Styx team to win the set 7-0 and also win the match 11-3 and become SEPF Interleague Champions for 2009.
The prize for winning and becoming Scottish Champions sees the team from Styx take on the best from around Europe in April 2010 in the European Cup. In this event teams from England, France, Northern Ireland, Wales, Malta & Republic or Ireland compete for the title of European Cup Champions 2010.
The Tournament Organisers would like to thank all of the players who took part this year and in particular all of the new players who had attended for the first time. And we would also like to welcome everyone back next year to compete for the title of SEPF Interleague Champions 2010. "

UPC Press Release
The Universities Pool Council is pleased to announce the details of its programme for the coming season with competitions to decide the champions at individual, team and representative level. With many previously strong teams losing key players due to graduation and the expected participation from new teams, the season ahead looks to be wide open.
The season begins with the UPC Nine-ball Championships over the weekend of 4-6 December 2009 in the event's new home, Riley's in Liverpool. University of Warwick, who claimed a clean sweep of the titles in 2008-09, will be vehemently trying to retain their silverware.
Vauxhall Holiday Park, Great Yarmouth will again play host to the BUCS-UPC Eight-Ball Championship, Trophy, Shield and Individual Championship concurrently on the weekend of 25-28 February 2010. This epic event will see last year's Championship winners Queen's University, Belfast bidding to win the Team Championship for an unprecedented third time, with Lee Morris (University of West of England) and Rich Wharton (Anglia Ruskin) aspiring to join Paul Edwards as a multiple winner of the Individual Championship.
The Women’s Eight-ball Championship will be held in Riley's, Coventry on the weekend of 19-20 March 2010 where attention will once again be focussed on whether any university can challenge Oxford’s continued stranghold on this event.
The season wraps up with the representative event – Student Eight-ball Pool Home Internationals – held in Cardiff and will incorporate the BUCS Home Nations. Team England, led by their charismatic manager Jon Shapland, will be determined to retain their title for the third year running.

UPC Press Release
The Tara Towers Hotel in Dublin hosted the culmination of the 2008-2009 university pool season as England Students retained the Student Eight-ball Pool Home Internationals with a tense win over an Irish side competing on home-soil.
This tournament is played using a group format with each country playing their counterparts once. The top two teams from the final table compete for the Student Home Internationals title with the leading British team being crowned the BUCS-UPC Home Nations Champions.
England began their defence against Ireland, a team who strongly fancied taking their title with players such as Stephen Dempsey (2007 EEPF Mens European Champion) and David Columb (current HESPC Irish Pool Intervarsities Individual Champion) representing them. Jon Shapland as England team manager was back again to blend the experience of Lee Morris (current BUCS-UPC Individual Champion) Rich Wharton ( BUCS-UPC Individual Champion 2007-2008 ) and James Murphy (defending Student International Masters Champion) with the new faces such as Adam Brown (Oxford), Matt Champ (Portsmouth) and Ryan Birt (Warwick) who earnt their place within his ranks at the recently held trials. With many tipping these two teams to reach the final, this opening match went the distance with Rich Wharton stepping up to the plate in the decider to draw first blood for England.
Scotland, under the stewardship of Gary Ferguson (former Scotland student representative) for the first time, were intent on making an impression in this tournament and were represented by a mix of the strong Scottish pool playing universities of Strathclyde, St Andrews and Robert Gordon. Their opening opponents were Wales, the perennial underdogs in this tournament, but in previous years have demonstrated that they are not afraid to upset this so-called form book. Team Manager Huw Stapleton, regarded by many to be the backbone that harnesses the Welsh team spirit, led a Welsh contingent who were predominantly Cardiff based. For both teams, this was a key opening match with the victor provided with a foothold to stake a claim for a final berth. In a further example of how fiercely this tournament is contested, a deciding frame was again required with the scores at 10-10 and it was Scotland who emerged with a key win.
Day two started with the second set of group matches fulfilling expectations with Ireland and England recording comprehensive victories over Scotland and Wales respectively. Each team still had a chance of qualification but England with two wins were firmly in the driving seat.
Scotland were hoping for a repeat of last year’s epic group victory over the ‘auld enemy’ to give themselves a chance of qualification but England were in no mood to roll over. England gained the early initiative and when they closed the match with an 11-5 victory, Scotland’s only hope of qualification rested with an unlikely Welsh victory over Ireland. Ireland, knowing that a win would guarantee qualification, proved relentless with the dream (for Wales and Scotland!) of a huge Welsh turnaround ending with a crushing 11-2 defeat.
With the narrowest margin separating England and Ireland in their group game, the final was poised to be a keenly contested affair. With the scores locked at 4-4 after the opening eight frames, it would be a brave man to bet that this match wasn’t going to go to the wire as well! At a pivotal time in the second leg, Ireland stamped their authority and surged into a 9-6 lead. With the knowledge that they were only two frames from defeat, Ryan Birt hauled England back into the contest with a critical victory and this proved to be the turning point for the match. Wins for Morris, Champ and Rob Cork quickly followed and when Rich Wharton extracted two visits from his opponent, he duly wrapped up an 11-9 victory by sinking the winning black for the second year running for England to retain their BUCS-UPC Home Nations title.
Jon Shapland captured what this victory meant to his England side when he said, “based soley upon the strength of the opposition we had to overcome to win it again this time, it was without a doubt our best victory yet. I am very, very proud of our achievement.”
Stephen Dempsey and Lee Morris were jointly crowned as MVP with 7 wins out of 8 for Ireland and England respectively.
Players from England Students dominated the Student International Masters providing four of the quarter-finalists. The first semi-final saw Jay Murphy (with high hopes of retaining his title) getting the better of David Columb. In the other, Adam Brown set up an all-England final with a virtuoso performance against Stuart Thompson (Wales).
In a high quality encounter which proved to be a fitting end to the Student International Masters, Adam Brown emerged triumphant by a 4-2 scoreline over Murphy with an almost flawless display of dishing to secure an English clean sweep over the weekend.
